History

1958

Atkinson Engineering was founded by Brian Atkinson, the first generation of our family business. Starting from humble origins, the production facility was established in a cow shed in Ashtead, Surrey. Brian Atkinson went on to invent the revolutionary Atkinson Sight Gauge (Tankmaster)

1967

Expansion and Growth: The business relocated to the West Wilts Trading Estate in Westbury, Wiltshire. A 99-year lease was purchased for £2,000 and a new factory was constructed on the site to support the company’s growing operations.

1970

Strategic Diversification: The company acquired Taylor-Davis, a sheet metal work and fabrication business based in Bristol. This move marked a significant step toward diversifying beyond the oil industry.

1973

Adapting to Challenges: Following the Oil Crisis and the Yom Kippur War, the business faced a dramatic downturn. In response, the business had to reinvented itself as a sub-contract engineering facility, paving the way for a more resilient and versatile operation.

1975

The Taylor Davis business was moved to Westbury, Wiltshire.

1976

A New Generation: Clive Atkinson, representing the second generation of the family, joined the business, bringing fresh perspectives and continuing the legacy of innovation and growth.

Expansion into Packaging: A subsidiary packaging business was established, marking a new venture and broadening the company’s scope of operations.

Clive Atkinson became the major shareholder and took on the role of Managing Director, leading the company into a new era of growth and innovation.

2019

The Next Generation: Giles and Greg Atkinson, representing the third generation, have become major shareholders, taking the helm following Clive Atkinson’s retirement and continuing the family legacy.
